Web 2.0 in the Classroom: Harnessing the Potential; Avoiding the Pitfalls
Key Stakeholders
Stratford Primary School is a decile 4 full primary school of approximately 400 students and 20 teachers. The community of Stratford is essentially traditional in its nature and in its values. The schools mission statement is "A great place to learn and a fun place to be. We are a quality school."
It is one of the school's stated educational goals within their Charter "To promote the use of computers and relevant teaching technology to assist the learning of children." As is also the goal, "To challenge, review, rethink, and respond to the changing needs of our pupils."
Stakeholders:
- Students
Are our primary stakeholders - it is their quality of education that is foremost.
"More and more, they just don’t tolerate the old ways – and they are enraged we are not doing better by them. So we have to find ways to present our curricula in ways that engage our students." Prensky 2005, p4. - Parents/Whanau
Best Evidence Synthesis of Community and Family Influences on Children’s Achievement states that, “The influences of families/whanau and communities are identified as key levers for high quality outcomes for diverse children.” p8. Our students' families need to be included in and informed about their children's education. Interaction afforded by web 2.0 tools can strengthen communication between home and school. - Teachers
The role of the teacher is key to the implementation of educational technologies and changes in classroom practise. (Nachmias, Mioduser, Cohen, Tubin,& Forksosh-Baruch, 2004) (Zhao, Pugh, Sheldon & Byers 2002) An important determiner in the integration of ICT is a teacher's pedagogical beliefs, attitudes towards technology use and its perceived value in education. (Lai & Pratt, 2005) - Principal
The Principal has a critical role to play as an agent of change within the school. They are the ones who should lead the vision, recruit the support and allocate the resources that would underpin any initiatives. (Nachmias et al, 2004) - Wider community - school community, Stratford & Taranaki & beyond.
This stake-holder group has particular significance within a web 2.0 scenario as they will come into closer contact with the school through the online activities of our students.
